To become a specialist or certified doctor

To get a new nephrologist

Target: Physicians who will begin specialized training in basic fields after April 2018
(Doctors who obtained their nephrology certification before that were required to obtain nephrology certification under the previous system.)

・Basic area specialist qualifications include internal medicine, pediatrics, urology, and surgery.

- Have obtained a specialist license in internal medicine by the previous year and completed nephrology training by the end of March of that year.
(For example, if you obtain your internal medicine specialist qualification by the end of fiscal year 2022 and complete your nephrology training by the end of March 2023, you will be able to submit the documents due in May 3.)

After submitting the following three documents, if you pass the screening, you will be able to apply for the specialist examination.

To become a dialysis specialist

1) Hold a Japanese medical license.

2) Certified physician or specialist of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine and the Japanese Society of Surgery
Specialist of the Japan Urological Association, the Japan Pediatric Society, and the Japanese Society of Acute Medicine
Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists instructor
Hold the above qualifications and have at least 5 years of clinical experience. (The first year of initial training does not count as clinical experience.)

3) Have undergone clinical training primarily related to dialysis therapy for a total of three years or more, including one year or more at a facility certified by the Japan Society for Dialysis Therapy, or three years or more at an educational facility, and have a proven track record.

* In principle, a working period of 4 days or more per week will be recognized as one year of training. However, working 1 days per week is equivalent to 3/1 of one year of training, and working 4 days per week is equivalent to 3/2 of one year of training. Working only 1 day per week will not be recognized as part of the training period.

4) Meet the performance standards set out in the implementing rules of the Specialist System Regulations.

*Those applying for specialist certification must have acquired the 30 credits set out in the "Certification Criteria for Initial Certification and Renewal of Specialists and Instructors" (hereinafter referred to as the "Certification Criteria").
The above credits must include attendance at the Annual Academic Meeting of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy at least once.
The candidate must have presented at least one academic conference as the lead author and published at least one paper. However, the paper may be co-authored.

5) Have been deemed eligible in the specialist certification examination and review and have completed registration as a specialist.

6) At the time of application, applicants must have been members of this Society for three years or more.

To obtain a Peritoneal Dialysis Coordination Certification/Peritoneal Dialysis Certification

I. Eligibility to apply for collaborative certification
A certified doctor must meet the following qualifications:

1. Hold a Japanese medical license and possess the character and insight required of a medical doctor

2. Basic field specialist qualifications are not required, but applicants must have at least 5 years of clinical experience.

3. Be a regular member of the Society at the time of application

4. Have attended the Basic Peritoneal Dialysis Seminar or Peritoneal Dialysis Certified Nurse Instructor Certification Course held at the Society's academic conference or general meeting

II. Qualifications for applying for certification
1. A certified doctor must meet all of the following qualifications:

1) Hold a Japanese medical license and have the character and insight required of a doctor

2) Basic field specialist qualifications are not required, but applicants must have at least 5 years of clinical experience.

3) Be a regular member of the Society at the time of application.

3) At the time of application, the applicant must be a specialist of the Japan Society for Dialysis Therapy or have served as a certified affiliated physician for more than three years.

5) At the time of application, the applicant must have attended the Society's academic conferences and general meetings at least three times.

6) At the time of application, the candidate must have at least one presentation or one paper (basic or clinical research or case report acceptable) related to peritoneal dialysis in the past five years (it is acceptable to be non-first author in either case).
